Dr. William K. Fleming is President for Humana Inc., a 10 million member health benefits organization. His responsibilities in running Humana’s PBM (Humana Pharmacy Solutions) include:
- Ensuring that day to day PBM operations run as planned and deliver Perfect Service
- Leading all aspects of pharmacy management and the management of $12+ billion of drug spend
- Reporting the P&L for pharmacy operations
- Leading effort around the Medicare Part D pharmacy strategies and programs
- Creating innovative consumer-focused pharmacy benefit designs
- Leading research to understand behaviors within the complex healthcare system
- Identifying and leveraging the connection between pharmaceuticals and impact on medical outcomes
- Leveraging technology (i.e. web, voice-activated technology, snail mail) to empower the user (e.g. consumer, physician, employer, consultant)
- Connecting with the actuarial and underwriting process
Dr. Fleming has lectured on topics ranging from pharmacy industry trends and drug trends to the clinical effects of drugs, presenting to such organizations as various pharmacy trade associations, associations of health underwriters, actuarial societies, and multiple broker/employer symposia. He is an active member of several professional associations, including the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy. Recently, Dr. Fleming testified to the United States Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee concerning Medicare Part D.
Dr. Fleming has developed and launched innovative benefit designs that drive the idea of choice, transparency, and independence into the decision-making process of the consumer. Through this work, he has become an inventor of three patent-pendings. He has led the development and launch of outreach communication/education programs that give the consumer information so they are engaged in the decision-making process.
Dr. Fleming received his BS Pharmacy from the University Of Kentucky College Of Pharmacy; where he went on to receive his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). He also holds a BS in Biology from Transylvania University.
Dr. Fleming and his wife, Nancy, have three beautiful children Hunter, Meredith, and Teagan. He enjoys spending time with family, friends, golfing and running, where he has completed nine marathons. Dr. Fleming has served on the Boards of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, the Louisville Healthcare Fellows, and is active in his church.
