Jim DuCharme is president and chief executive officer of Prime Therapeutics (Prime), a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) serving more than 26 million people.
In 2014, Prime had nearly $20 billion in drug spend under management and processed more than 288 million claims, placing Prime among the five largest PBMs in the country.
Prime’s success is based on the company’s unique business model. Prime is collectively owned by 13 nonprofit Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans. This integrated relationship enables Prime to manage prescription drug costs paid under the pharmacy and medical benefit. Prime serves 20 Blue Plans, employer groups and smaller PBMs.
With more than 20 years of experience in health plan management, DuCharme has a deep understanding of health plan operations and the value that integrated care offers to Prime’s members, owners and clients.
DuCharme joined Prime in 2012 as chief financial officer (CFO). Before coming to Prime, he served as CFO and treasurer for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont. Earlier in his career, DuCharme held finance positions at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
DuCharme received his Master of Business Administration in corporate finance from the University of Pittsburgh and his bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Dickinson College. He is a certified public accountant as well as a certified management accountant.
