(Washington, D.C.) — After more than seven years leading the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) and in the last year of his contract with the organization, PCMA President and CEO Juan Carlos “JC” Scott today announced his decision to step down before the end of the year.
“JC has led PCMA during a critical period of transition in health care. He works tirelessly to advocate for the PBM industry and our mission to lower prescription costs for the patients, businesses, labor unions, health plans, and public partners we’re proud to serve,” said PCMA board chairman Adam Kautzner, PharmD, President, Evernorth Care Management & Express Scripts. “We value JC’s role in leading PCMA to where it is today during a time of dynamic changes on Capitol Hill and in the states. As we begin the search for a new head of the association, it is helpful to have JC’s continued guidance in this transition period.”
During Scott’s tenure, PCMA, the leading trade association representing America’s pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), became a stronger and more representative organization, adding several new member companies, including a new seat at the association’s board table for mid-market companies. As a result, PCMA’s membership is more inclusive of the entire PBM market.
The PBM industry continues to significantly evolve in the way it delivers lower drug costs for clients and patients. At PCMA, Scott helped advance a vision that harnessed industry change while defending and promoting the value delivered by PBMs for employers, health plan sponsors, and patients.
Scott’s leadership and strategic decision-making successfully guided the association’s ability to shape numerous policies that threatened to undermine the ability of PBMs to deliver lower drug costs or the ability of employers to contract freely with PBMs. In addition, Scott adeptly and compassionately navigated PCMA, and its staff, through the COVID pandemic.
Under Scott’s leadership, PCMA built a top-level strategic planning process, deepened relationships with key stakeholders, and grew its ability to represent the industry throughout the country.
“Leading PCMA has been an incredible and rewarding professional opportunity. I am grateful to the industry and the board for trusting me with this role for the last seven years,” said Scott. “I am proud of what we’ve accomplished as we have pursued our critically important mission of delivering patients access to affordable prescription drugs. The team that we have assembled is made up of some of the best people I have worked with in my career. We have built something significant, and I know I am leaving PCMA better than I found it, which gives me confidence in what will come next for the trade association.”
Scott has been named annually to Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare, Washington, DC’s 500 Most Influential People by Washingtonian, and the Hill’s Top Association Lobbyists lists.
