Visante has estimated the impact of health care provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) on the adoption of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) and resulting savings and safety gains. ARRA provides grants and financial incentives for physicians and other providers to implement electronic health records (EHRs) that include e-prescribing functionality. These measures promise to encourage the adoption of e-prescribing beyond levels anticipated last year when a more targeted program to spur e-prescribing was passed as part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA).
