Pharmacy benefit companies (also called PBMs) recognize that pharmacies are an important part of patient care across the U.S. Especially in rural areas, patients may depend on their pharmacist for more than just filling prescriptions; for example, providing clinical services such as vaccinations and help managing chronic conditions.
With the recent agreement to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year and the decision not to include provisions targeting pharmacy benefit companies, there is an opportunity to think again before misguided legislation is advanced that would do nothing to lower prescription drug costs for patients.
Drug companies often raise list prices annually in January and July. In January 2021, 822 brand drugs raised prices an average of 4.6%, and in 67 brand drugs raised prices an average 3.5% in July . . .
